You are invited to a lecture by Assoc. Prof. Azmi Sharom from the University of Malaya on “The Power of the Vote – the People’s Prerogative”, followed by a film screening of George Orwell’s Animal Farm at the Pusat Rakyat LoyarBurok on the 9th of March 2013, 11am.
What is Animal Farm?
Animal Farm is the story of Communism told in a farm setting. The animals, led by pigs revolt against the cruel human farm owner, under whose leadership the animals are used and exploited. One pig leads the revolt and takes over and tries to turn the farm into a sort of Utopia with principles to prevent animals from ever becoming like man which they have cast out, but a coup soon takes place where another pig has a different vision of Utopia. Their faith now appropriated by, and entrusted to, the new regime, the other animals are brainwashed and manipulated by said pig while slowly turning into the same type of person that the owner originally was….and the farm tumbles down a death spiral and the animals are left no better of than when they started with their new animal masters being no better than the humans they revolted together against.
Of course, what you take away from Animal Farm (where some animals are more equal than others) is your own interpretation. While you may be tempted to draw your own parallels, remember, this is a story about animals. Any coincidence to anyone living or dead is purely coincidental, and all the usual disclaimers lah.
