(UPDATED with photos from the ground) A musing on the many firsts for Sibu that took place in the few weeks leading up to last Sunday’s by-election, that reflects a changed Malaysia.
An appeal to the churches that were reported to have allegedly received “special grants” totalling RM1.75 million from the Federal Government in the final hours of the Sibu by-election campaign.
A documentary produced for KOMAS about the changes post 2008 general elections, primarily meant to for voter and democracy education was seized by Sibu police on the pretext that it was seditious. Watch it here and decide for yourself.
A deliberation on the fate of Sibu – a town that has been on a steady decline since the 80s – after the buzz and attention from the by-election courtship is over.
A consideration on why no Sarawakian should feel that they live in a distant cocoon, impervious to so-called “national issues” often deemed “too far away”.
